Something New

I’m not a sock knitter. I don’t have a problem with sock knitters the way some other non-sock knitters do. I don’t think it’s a waste of time, I’m just not interested. It’s the reason I’ve never made baby booties – Too sock-like.

Having finished my shawl I was working on, I needed something to knit while watching an hour worth of TV. I don’t know why, but I had a sudden need to make baby booties. A quick Ravelry search and I had a pattern, and after a quick trip to my knitting cabinet I also had the materials. I read through the pattern and felt I had the skills to complete it, but couldn’t really envision its construction. Sometimes figuring it out as I go makes the most sense since I’ve got the stitches in hand.

I must say these little booties come together in the the most marvellous way. They really are very simple! (sorry about the photo quality here, I snapped them with my iPhone on a whim.)

I was finished both booties by the next evening including seaming. My first bootie has a couple of mistakes, since I was figuring it out as I went. The second is perfect. Once I knew how these little guys were knit it seemed so obvious. I now have some great modification ideas to make the seamless, including how to knit them in the round, using a different stitch pattern, and how to graft the heel . I also devised a marvellous way to give these guys some extra stay-on power. I hope to share once I have it all figured out.

And since I haven’t make any sort of announcement these little guys are for my newest knitting muse due this September. We know he is a boy and we’re narrowing down names.

You can find the pattern for these on my Ravelry page. The pattern is an archive and is still available, but is published in Norwegian. There is a link on my page to another Raveler’s translation.
